If you had very little money to spend (like, $8-900 TOPS for everything, air, lodging, rental car if necessary), and only a week (MAYBE 9-10 days),where's a neat place to go? I'm looking for somewhere in the US that's different from where I've spent most of my life (Boston/New England), or somewhere in the Europe vicinity that's cheap-would love to see some suggestions from people who have been there, done that...! :)

I recently went to england for $1000 all-inclusive, with airfare on BA being $360 including tax and fees. Catch is, I only paid for 5 nights in guest houses our of my 2-week stay, but then, I also did some traveling all around the country so I had train costs. However, I didn't always stay at the cheapest rate, either. If you're willing to stay in a group-dormitory situation, there are even rooms to be found in central London (otherwise London is not a cheap city) for 15-20 pounds a night.
If you do decide to do England, definitely drop me a line, I've still got all my travel guides and can recommend the cheap hostels and guest houses and how to get discount train and subway passes etc. Plus another advantage is that many of the attractions in London, like museums, are free.

I will also second [livejournal.com profile] dykeprincess above. Montreal is great, has a very european feel, and it only costs $100 for a round-trip on the bus, which takes about 6 hours and goes through beautiful countryside. And their youth hostel is pretty good, too.
