I really do like the new lidded garbage cans that Somerville has been giving out & asking us to use in lieu of our old ones. Thing is, I now have 2 of the new ones (because I'm in a two-family, both my tenants & I got one) and 5 old ones. This, in addition to the 2 no-sort recycling pails take up more than 1/2 my garage. How do I get rid of the old ones? Leaving them on the curb on garbage day had no effect.

Have you called 311 to ask on this one? I'm not quite in the same boat but I expect a LOT of people will need this info, and I hope the city has a response already.

As per http://www.somervillema.gov/departments/dpw/trash-procedures

"Trash barrels & Recycling Bins- To dispose of damaged barrels or bins, place a sign indicating that item is broken and you wish to dispose of it."

(Yours may not be damaged, but it would still basically apply. Though if they are in good shape, you might try CL -- somebody might want them.)

This was what worked for me.

This worked for me too. "Please take barrel" on a sign.

Label it as trash, but in Cambridge I once had to cut out the bottom so they realized I meant it.

I don't mind if you throw it away, but regular-size trash cans (very very well cleaned, and proven watertight on the bottom) are an excellent size and material for a home emergency kit - like you'd have in case of hurricane or power outage. Can opener and cans, dehydrated soup, bottles of water, that kind of thing.

We converted our extra one to a "yard waste only" one. They give out the stickers over at the lot behind Trum. It's already been handy for that, for the intermittent weeding without having a paper bag hanging around for weeks.

Likewise - but now we have to get rid of our old yard waste can :)

I agree it's a puzzle. I balanced my old trash can horizontally on top of a new trash can, plus put a sign on it saying "trash". It worked.

One of mine is marked HDPE #2 so is going in the recycling tote. The other is now for yard waste.

I know this post was a while ago, but if you still have the old ones, and they're in decent shape, we'd be happy to take one or two off your hands! Let me know...
