I have a bunch of old, possibly rare, coins, and I'd like to find out their value. Can anyone recommend someone in the Greater Boston area who does this? Davis would be fantastic, but I'll travel a bit if I need to.

Might I suggest Reddit instead at least to get a starting idea before going to a "specialist"

http://www.reddit.com/r/coins/

Make an account, post a few good pictures to imgur, and simply ask "what is this coin". People do this all the time.

Places that buy and sell coins over the counter are going to lowball you, ESPECIALLY if you go in having no idea about the value or what the thing you have is.

That subreddit is filled with collectors, and coin geeks, and not people trying to make money off of you.

You can then sell your coins on ebay (if this is your goal) for much more than you could ever get from an in-person dealer.

I have gone to CollVest Coins in Medford (84 High Street) with some currency questions and found him to be very nice and knowledgeable: http://www.collvestcoins.com/

I'd generally agree with this over a dealer person (in their defense, they also get these sort of inquiries a lot and generally don't get much business/reward for the effort).

similarly, there are plenty of price/value guides online that will at least give you a range of values. Almost all coins are of a lower condition that what you'd think so look at the low end ("good"). This will at least alert you if you have something particularly special. You can even just google the type of coin, the year, and the mint (whether it has a P, D, or S on it) and usually get some sort of result.

A friend of mine is a coin collector, lives near Davis, and loves helping people figure out the value of collections. He will let you know the fair value of the collection and offer to purchase coins that he might need for *his* collection, if you are willing to sell. He asked me to post his email:
