I'd like to start composting my kitchen scraps. Does anyone have experience with the tumblers that DPW is selling? Are they worth the $90?

I added the compost tag to your post. If you click on the tag, you'll see old posts on the subject, which may or may not be useful to you. ETA: Never mind the old posts -- [livejournal.com profile] surrealestate just pointed out that this is a brand-new kind of composter.

Oh, wow, that is so great that they are selling those! I had a similar one that I trash picked, but it only had one compartment, which was my main complaint, because it meant we had to stop feeding to get the stuff to finish. I would never get one of those Earth Monsters because of the pest issue and also having to manually turn it. If our new place didn't already have a robust composting setup (I gave my tumbler to a friend), I would be ALL OVER one of these. IMHO, totally worth it.

Sadly, I am no longer accustomed to seeing an 'e' in that word.

I have a similar compost tumbler. It is great. You get usable compost, it doesn't smell and we haven't had any problems with rodents. The only problem, as mentioned above, is that you can't get usable compost if you continue to feed it. I don't put scraps in ours during the winter months, but continue to spin it occasionally. In the spring, when I am getting my garden ready, I empty out the compost. If I could do it again, I would get a dual chamber tumbler (and now that I think about it, maybe I can add a divider into mine) or I might buy a second unit. In addition to the compost, I keep a bucket under the drip hole and get good 'compost tea' for garden watering.

$90 is a reasonable, but not fantastic price. Costco and Amazon both have a dual chamber tumbler for $99

My tenants have one that is shared among 6 people and it is just not big enough. I think it would work better with a smaller household :D
