This is gonna sound strange, but....I need to buy bagels tomorrow morning, and I don't know where to get decent ones around here. Where can a person find good bagels in the Davis/Porter/Medford area?
Shaw's is now selling pretty good "Imported from New York!" bagels in their bakery section.
Is their cheese "Imported from Vermont?" Are their potatoes "Imported from Idaho?" Apparently New York achieved Nation-State status at some point.
Back on topic, Bagels by Us, just north of Arlington Center on Mass Ave has H & H bagels, which are widely beloved. Yes, that's right: Bagels by Us sells bagels by Someone Else, apparently. Hey, it wasn't my idea.
good luck! as someone from the ny area i can honestly say the bagels i've gotten around davis are total crap. i say just bite the bullet and drive to brookline or newton -- better quality (rosenfeld's in newton, kugel's in coolidge corner, etc).
oh, and i forgot to mention that i posted this exact same question when i first moved to davis! some posters suggested the magnificent muffin in teele (which i haven't tried), blue shirt or pemberton for iggy's, and diesel's bagels (which i actually find kind of gross..they're like large hunks of wonder bread that happened to have been shaped into a circular form).
I can't speak for Newton, but most of the bagels in Coolidge Corner suck, too. I'm not familiar with Kugel's, but I know Kupel's were crap. I don't think they even make them properly.
Not that I want to bring up bad memories, but we shared a mutual, erm, "aquaintance" (what feels like) a couple of years ago. There was a CD involved at the end. I shall not mention it again.
Anyway. nice to meet you! Thought you were interesting back then, but only knew you secondhand. Maybe you knew me secondhand as well.
*laughs* yes....I stole a Kate Bush CD from someone, and was rightfully hunted down by the cops and arrested in Spring of 2004. they just let me out on parole a couple of weeks ago. ;-)
your LJ name is familiar. did you use to share an apartment with the victim of my theft?
Haha, yes! Damn, 1.5 years for CD theft? That's tough! I actually just realised I knew you from somewhere else, too. Everytime I realise how small the world can be, it hurts my brains, and I get so excited.
Yeah, I used to live with Them, until She started to have a problem with another friend. Living... now there's an amusing term.
And I forgot, you met Brian during that ordeal, right? Did you donate to his Toby/truffle fund? Have you ever tried his truffles? *drool*
Actually, you might talk to Rhett or Amy at True Grounds (Ball Square) and ask if you can buy a bunch, or where they get theirs from. They're good people, and they had a bagel I didn't mind (I'm not a bagel person).
I like the Iggy's bagels at Pemberton Farms. For some reason they taste better to me than Iggy's bagels bought elsewhere. Kupel's bagel-and-challah catered my wedding and I liked their bagels, but it's a different style -- Cos is right. But it may also be true that I wasn't paying much attention to bagels at that point.
