What's a good bar in Davis Square (or Porter, for that matter) to go to have a glass of wine and talk? Since "talk" is a part of the equation, it can't be too loud a place...

Gargoyles was suggested, but is there someplace less...you know...? I had thought perhaps of Christopher's?
It's a first/blind date thing. Help a girl out, here, please!

I've never been, but I've heard the Temple Bar (http://www.templebarcambridge.com) is good for that sort of thing.

I'd say Temple Bar, too, although depending on the day of the week, the Burren is great. But if you want conversation, don't go between Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Good luck!

the burren is great only when school's not in session around here.

It used to be called Metro, but now it's called Giuseppe's, right next to the Porter Sq. T station in the Porter Exchange building. Decent selection of wine, should be fine for conversation. You can definitely hear each other talk, and it's not too put on, like Gargoyles might be on a first date. Just stay away from the food -- they're still working out the kinks while they switch menus.

I second this recommendation. They have a leather seating area that is nice and intimate and comfy. Back when it was the Metro I use to go for wine and oysters and steak tatare. Like the post above, I'm not sure about the new italian menu, but the wine and the couches are still there.

I say Christopher's is your best bet.

I was going to recommend the same due to
the fire place...and overall coziness...

I also am partial to the west side lounge
for espresso martinis

:o)

Orleans

I think people go to Orleans (former Aquarium) for drinks of the martini variety, so i don't know what their wine list is like. I'd go there if i wanted a quiet date at the bar (but not during prime hours on the weekend) when I didn't want to run into any of my friends at the Burren.

No one ever remembers there's a bar there, but Marino's over on Mass. Ave. has a nice selection of wines and a good, quiet atmosphere.

Good luck with the date!

Orleans has some nice comfy couches, as well as a decent wine selection. If couches are full, they also have some small (ie: 2 person) tables. The appetizers range in gourmet to satisfying (crab cakes are delish but not filling) if you decide for some lite food.

My second would be Temple Bar. I think their prices are higher than Orleans. Plus a further walk from Train (unless you're not one of the bus-phobes.. the 77 goes right past).

I haven't tried (forgetting the new name) the place in Porter that used to be Metro.

I'd nix Christopher's. Tables are so close together, and I've always gotten the feel that it's a restaurant that has a bar, as opposed to a place to go for just drinks.

Best of luck!!
