I'm on the lookout for a bank for a small business venture on which I've embarked. The Winter Hill Bank seems to have what I'm looking for -- namely a no-minimum-deposit, no-minimum-balance checking account for small businesses. They have a great location that's convenient for me, and their customer service on my visit was very good.

However, after visiting a few small banks and learning about their checking accounts, I have to admit that this sounds too good to be true. Do any of you bank with Winter Hill? If so, what has your experience been? Is there anything (apart from Whitey Bulger, of course) that I should be worried about?

Thanks for any insights you can give.

I do all my banking with Winter Hill. I have a lot of different accounts. I've never had any issues. They also offer a lot of services like on-line banking, debit card and bill pay services. I also like the atmosphere. They're small and you get to know everyone.

I've been with WHB since I moved here in 2000, with a basic savings and checking account. I went with it because, at the time, I needed something that required no minimum balance and no direct deposit with no fees.

Their customer service is, indeed, good. They're all friendly and nice. I don't even get funny looks when, month after month, I deposit my roommate's rent check with "sensual massage" written in the memo field. He's such a comedian.

Anyway, it was fine for a while, but I noticed a ways back that they started charging me $0.75 for every ATM withdrawl I made at another bank's ATM -- even if said bank itself didn't charge me. To make it even better, they recently jacked it up to $1.00.

Now, I'm not one to read fine print, so I don't know if it's specific to my particular kind of account or something, but I'm starting to find $10-20 in ATM fees per month, from my own bank, a bit egregious. I'm shopping around, but may just settle on the devil known as BoA out of convenience.

Good luck to you, though.

Actually, BofA also charges you when you use someone else's ATM, but since there are so many BofA's around, it's usually easy to find an ATM. Citizens, I believe, also does the same thing.

I've been using Winter Hill while I've lived in Somerville, also. When I had a chance to go to Davis Square, and check out the local banks, they were the only ones who bothered to put on a friendly face for me. It also helped that they were open a little later that day...

Never had any trouble with them, afaik.
