Anyone know where I can find the more local election results? I've tried WBUR and Boston.com, but still haven't found all the things I saw on my ballot.
That was the only seriously contested local race in Somerville. Senator Pat Jehlen, Representative Denise Provost, and Representative Tim Toomey all had only token opposition. Congressman Mike Capuano was unopposed.
I think all of these results are okay. I was a little worried about the Lanzilli-Barber face-off even up to the end.
Also, I'm Noelani Kamelamela and I ran against Denise Provost in the 27th Middlesex District. I am token opposition. I am a queer female of color and a member of the Pirate Party. Our campaign in Somerville garnered 11.9% of the vote, over twice the percentage any third party could muster for any race in the state. The campaign blog is up at votenoelani.org if anyone wants to peruse it.
I am one of the first two Pirates who made it onto the general election ballot Massachusetts this year. All of our weekly meeting minutes are readable for citizens who have internet access and making internet access possible for everyone is one of our standard issues. Feel free to look us up at masspirates.org, we're often out in the world and on the internet doing stuff.
At this point, I should apologize for calling you "token opposition". That's an impressive showing for an independent or third-party candidate. I liked what you and the Pirates have to say -- but I also like Denise Provost and want her to stay in the legislature.
Who was the other Pirate Party candidate, and what district did s/he run in?
I think that's a fair reason to vote for Denise. I also support Denise's efforts, even if it looks like many of her progressive stances are severely cooled by the conservative views of her fellow Democrats. This past session was quite upsetting to me as a fan of her work.
The other Pirate candidate's name is Joseph Guertin and he ran in the 8th Worcester District. His campaign garnered 4% of the vote. The victorious incumbent is a Republican, Kevin Kuros, who slid back into the office he originally secured in 2011 from Democrat Paul Kujawski (Representative from 1994-2011). Joseph Hall, a Democrat, also ran and achieved 35% of the vote.
I think it's somewhat interesting that ward 1, which will bear the supposedly negative impacts of the Everett casino, of all ballots cast, only 46% contained votes to repeal the casino bill.
If you ignore ballots that did not vote at all on the question, the ward voted in favor of repeal by 43 votes - a razor thin 51%-49% margin. In precinct 2, which is the precinct that is right next to Sullivan Square and directly across the river from the casino site, the vote in favor (where the question was not left blank) was 50.7% to 49.3% - an 11 vote difference out of 829 ballots.
In any case, the casino is now a fact of life, and Mayor Curtatone now has to figure out how to make the best of it.
