A friend who rents space in the basement of 240 Elm St (the former Social Security building) sent me this and said I can post it here:

The basement tenants have been notified they must vacate the premises by January 31, 2015. I received that notice earlier this week. The notice I received appeared to be a form letter to "Dear tenant" and said "we must terminate the tenancy of our remaining basement tenants."

I'm not in touch with any of the other tenants (including Boylston Chess Club) so I have no idea what is happening with them.

ETA: The chess club has moved just a few blocks away, to 40 Norris Street in North Cambridge, which used to be North Cambridge Catholic High School.

Yeah, luckily the chess club had seen the writing on the wall for a while and had been conducting a search for other spaces, and was able to pull the trigger on it pretty fast. The move already took place and we'll be up and running at the new location across Mass Ave in time for the annual New Year's Day tournament: http://boylston-chess-club.blogspot.com/2014/12/boylston-chess-foundation-presents-herb.html

Gracious, I had no idea that was no longer a school. What else is in the building now, besides you guys?

It's actually mostly vacant office space. I work for Davis Square Architects, who have occupied the top floor of the building for many years, and the Redbones office is (was?) on the second floor, but that's about all that's left as far as I know. Besides the Dunkin' Donuts, of course. There are no apartments or condos in the building unless they're a REALLY well-kept secret.

Argh, I just realized you were talking about 40 Norris St, not 240 Elm. I was talking about 240 Elm. Sorry for the confusion.

Need small office or cubicle space

Hi, I'm one of those folks who are being displaced from the basement of 240 Elm Street. I need a small office or cubicle space in another office.

Please advise.
