Comic routines dating back to the 16th century, used by performers in Commedia dell'Arte, slapstick, silent comedies of Chaplin, etc, and modern sitcoms. These comic bits are meant to interupt the action, drawing the audience back in by the absurdities of the characters plights.

Explore the masks of Commedia characters Arlecchino, Brighella, Capitano, & Pantalone and learn their movements, quirks, and social oddities!

Please wear non-restrictive clothing (no jeans

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Naomi Bennett is a physical comedian and teacher in the Cambridge/Somerville area. Her performances have been seen internationally: including the Avalon & Orpheum in Boston; Velocity in New York City; Tangénte in Montreal; & in Venice, Italy. The Grindhouse Marionettes, whom Miss Bennett is a regular performer, has opened for acts such as The Dresden Dolls and Nine Inch Nails. She has also recently formed the upstart Imo’an Performance Troupe which is currently working on The Silent Comedy Project for the Live Stage, exploring the silent movies styles of Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, & Buster Keaton.

Miss Bennett studied Commedia dell'Arte in Italy with VeneziaINscena, Physical Theatre with Andrew Hammerson in Montreal, locally with the Stanislavski Summer School, and earned a degree in Theatre from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Her theatre credits include choreographer and lead
actress for the Illegitimate Theatre Company’s musical productions “Mad Maids” (inspired by Genet's “The Maids”); actress and movement choreographer for “Some of my Best Friends are Men”, (inspired by Gore Vidal’s cult film/book “Myra Breckenridge”); and actress in an all woman adaptation of Gogol’s “The Gambles”.
