TV repair

My TV has decided that everything should be letterboxed. This is very irritating, particularly when watching something that's already letterboxed and is now squished into a tiny bar in the middle of the screen. I bought it used from Craigslist, so no warranty, and the nearest "licensed repair companies" for Apex are in Northfield and Plymouth. Um, no. Any suggestions for a good place around here that might be able to fix it? Preferably one that will pick up and deliver.

Not sure about repair but did you get the manual with it? I had a devil of a time getting my Toshiba HDTV and the Comcast cable box to play nice with each other. There are letterbox type setting with both in my case so maybe you don't need a repir but just the right set of settings. Just a thought to save you some time and money...

My sister bought an Apex and it started acting funky within a year. It was the cheapest brand new TV she could find. Is it worth fixing? I'm not being sarcastic.

i have a friend that does TV repair on the side; he usually goes to peoples houses and fixes them there.

if you were interested in having him do it, i can give him a call and see if he's still doing it...

If it's doing it all of the time with different video inputs (tuner, s-video, composite) then it's probably the electron gun control (it shoots the electrons to the front of the CRT). If the electromagnet, or plates (I can never remember which one controls the vertical) are damaged they cannot bend the beam of electrons as much and everything is squished. It will look like everyone on the screen are really wide. If the top and bottom are black and everyone is normal shaped then the signal going to the gun control is being clipped. A TV repair guy should be able to immediately figure this out with a scope. It may be something as simple as a bad capacitor, although if it were the flyback capacitor it would have problems on the other axis.

Someone should state the obvious, just to get it out of the way. Vertical size is adjustable on most tvs. Could some have screwed it up manually? Have you tried adjusting it?

You probably already checked this, but it never hurts to check. :)

You know, I thought of that. But I went through every setting on the menu, and poked through the manual too, and there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust it on this TV. Maybe there is and I just missed it...
