I'm looking to do some volunteer work this semester and I think I'd do best at something involving language. So, I think to myself, what about literacy? I have an inquiry in about youth tutoring and adult ESL tutoring at the Consilio Hispano in Cambridge (anyone know anything about it?), which I found through Volunteer Match and hopefully that will work out. But I wanted to see if the hive-davis-mind knew anything about other opportunities I should look into. Ideally, I'd be working with a Spanish-speaking population.

well

that depends on a couple of things, I suppose.

I'm the ESL coordinator up in Lawrence and we're looking to expand our ESL program to include a parent-outreach-esque type program and it would incorporate both ESL and literacy. That's a bit of a drive from Davis, but it is a primarily Hispanic population.
The program is only just getting off the ground, but there could definitely be potential for qualified volunteers.

If this sounds interesting, and you'd like to know more, email me via my userinfo.

does reading for the blind and dyslexic (http://www.rfbd.org/) (located over in cambridge) handle spanish-language recordings as well?

let me know if you find anything helpful. i would be particularly interested in ESL for the chinese-population. i've looked into a lot of places, but most have classes during the week, whereas i would prefer volunteering on weekends.

i know they have ESL classes at the ccae.org. also, i saw a couple listings on idealist.org

I used to volunteer at Tutoring Plus in Cambridge. They tutor kids in the evenings in all of their subjects. A lot of the kids speak Spanish or Haitian Kreyol. It's a great bunch of kids and a well-organized center, and the hours are good for working people.

concilio hispano

concilio hispano is great. they have a website, too, i think it's conciliohispano.org or something like that. they do a lot of different stuff -- computer classes, ESL, etc. they also have teen mentoring and some other things, but i don't remember. i went to an orientation there, once. i think i might volunteer there once i have more time. i believe they're near central. you should check them out.
