It seems that, while the trash collectors got Monday off, the enforcement staff didn't.

How many people got ticketed for having their trash out a day early? {sigh}

Our house forgot entirely.

Tickets for leaving it out a day early? That's obnoxious. I mean, if you'd left it out all week, sure. But one day?

Before 4pm the night before.

But usually three day weekends are a gimme; the trash collectors sometimes collect what's out that day anyways.

I have no problem with ticketing for this normally, but ticketing on a three day weekend when people are liable to break the ordinance inadvertently isn't reasonable.

Is there any reason to ticket for this at all, as long as people are using the lidded city-issued garbage carts?

It can make the sidewalks narrower/harder to navigate. I could see how a no-ticketing policy could lead to people keeping their cans at the curb at all times, which could be a larger inconvenience for pedestrians.

I'm really sorry - that sucks. I know we've accidentally put it out early on a holiday weekend and it seemed like they didn't ticket. Maybe that honeymoon is over.

What a crappy move by the city. Completely opportunistic, taking advantage of people being forgetful. Are they more worried about improper trash disposal or simply making money?

I think the answer to your question is pretty clear :-/

Columbus Day is one of those holidays that a lot of people don't get off, and therefore don't remember. As someone else mentioned, the T considers it a regular day.

This is simply revenue enhancement. Apparently, they can afford to pay ticket writers holiday pay, but not people who actually do something useful, like pick up the trash...

Complain and see if you can get the ticket rescinded.

I second this. In many ways, Columbus Day is not really a holiday -- for instance, the MBTA ran a regular weekday schedule on all lines and modes.

You should send an e-mail about this to your alderman. This is a completely unacceptable thing for the city to do.

Hi JB. Sorry to hear about your experience. I think the suggestion to appeal the ticket is a good one. While it may be a violation of the letter of the ordinance, there may be a degree of forgiveness from city departments for honest one-time mistakes like this (assuming that the case). That's not to say there is any promise the ticket will be forgiven but that's a starting point. Looking forward, if the City needs to do a better job of communicating issues relating to holiday schedules then that is certainly something we can discuss. I know there was a note in the Oct. 11 ResiStat email newsletter but it wasn't exactly in the most noticeable location.
