A national story, but with local implications. Walgreens and Rite Aid are a block apart in Winter Hill, so one of those stores would surely close or be sold to a competitor. And Walgreens recently failed spectacularly in Porter Square.
If the merger goes through, it would result in the fourth name for the Highland Avenue drugstore in 15 years. That store started out as Osco Drug, then Brooks Pharmacy, then Rite Aid.
