Tagged home repair, so you may want to take a look through recent posts there. This one from 2013 has a couple of recommendations, as does this one.. Maybe also this one, if your roof is slate (I can't remember if it is).
Other posts are from 2010 or before, so I don't know how useful they are.
General Contractors are good but if you do decide to use one you want them to use there own crew or you will most likely be paying a fee for them to "oversee" the job. So keep in mind finding a roofer or a contractor who will do the job themselves is the way to go
Another vote for Pete & his crew. Thoroughly professional, great to work with, and absolutely egalitarian in how he treats customers. Can't recommend him highly enough.
Last week I had HarCo Exteriors do the job. They're in Medford. I cannot give a higher recommendation for HarCo. Their price quoted was extremely reasonable, they always were prompt at coming, and tidied up afterwards. Their crew was extremely respectful and personable, yet professional. The owner of the company (John) was extremely professional and knows the value of good customer relations. I sent him an email stating I was uncertain how to judge the color of the sample online roofs when selecting a color, and within a half hour he was in my driveway with some sample colors of shingles! The owner was actually working as part of the crew each day, altho he was only here for an hour or two each day, his crew was here from 7:30 until 4 pm. He showed up at the exact time we agreed for the estimate, and scampered up on the roof for the estimate, the only of 4 companies to have a person actually stand on the roof for the estimate. The proposal was one page of clear writing (no legalese) and when the job was done, he did everything per that proposal. They completed the roof in parts so that if there was inclimate weather the roof was never exposed overnight. I called for an estimate the first week of October, got the estimate Oct 9, and the roof was worked on starting Nov 4. harcoexteriors@gmail.com 781-395-2005 is the phone number on the contract. Small Business, Very Honest, classic "New England Hard Worker" type.
Another one that gave me a good impression was Ranch Roofing (800) 771-3938. They were prompt and businesslike, but the guy doing the quote did not seem to be part of a crew actually doing the work. Ranch Roofing was also expensive, and said they weren't booking for jobs until spring. But their rep was very customer-oriented and the quote was very clear.
I also have a short list of some roofers I distrust:
Jack Golini: made an appt with me for an estimate, never showed up, no apology
Joseph S Savini, Inc. : Made an appointment for an estimate on a Thursday (they said "Tomorrow"), and never showed. Appeared on my doorstep unexpectantly on the next Tuesday at 10:30 am. While they did give an estimate, I was left unimpressed by the estimate and their customer service.
Chris Carroll roofing: made an appointment for an estimate and never showed up, no apology. However, a quote showed up in my email 3 weeks later.
