I know you can go to some supermarkets to cash in your cans (at least some) but where do I go to redeem my deposit on bottles and whatever the stores won't take?

the place you bought them. Stores are required by law to accept returns on the things they sell.

also, some liquor stores have a large area set up to do refunds, including an actual person who can take them if the machines won't. I haven't seen one of those around here yet, but I have in every other place I've lived, so I'm sure there must be one.

I believe that there's a bottle and can redemption center on Somerville Ave behind where the Star Market on Beacon St is (under 1/2 mile from Porter Sq).

Most Star Markets and Foodmasters have the can and bottle UPC code scanner machines (you put cans & bottles in and they give you a paper receipt to cash in at the register).

Ditto that. The Star Market/Shaw's in Porter Square takes cans, bottles, and glass.

I always put redeemables in my recycling bin. That way someone usually picks them up during the night and redeems them. I'm OK with giving away the deposit as long as someone else does the work of recycling them.
