The Subway store has a "for rent" sign in its window.

I guess it isn't coming back from the flood (or whatever pestilence was directed towards it (low foot traffic?)).

I wasn't a fan but some here were. I was more of a "wow... it has survived this long??" observer.
But then I feel the same about that Dominos pizza venue down the street from it which has been around for... 10 years??
Who buys pizza at "Dominos"? But hey, some people think Olive Garden is fine dining... so go figure (as we say in the midwest).

The sign also says "SUBWAY FRANCHISE AVAILABLE", which suggests that the franchise comes along with renting the storefront.

I wasn't a "fan", but I did go there sometimes when they inserted a coupon booklet in the Globe.

Even with this location closed, Somerville has more Subways than it has of any other major national fast-food chain*. Four Subways (Powderhouse Circle, Wilson Square, Union Square, Winter Hill) vs one McDonalds (Twin City Plaza), one Burger King (across from Target), one Au Bon Pain (Davis Square), no Wendy's, no KFCs, and no Taco Bells.

(* I'm not counting Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks, which aren't really the same kind of place.)

Where is the Winter Hill one? I can't picture it, nor find it on a map.

271 Broadway, just west of Foss Park.

Thanks. I'll have to make a point to look next time I pass by because I still can't envision it. Interesting that this location doesn't come up on Yelp nor in the top Google hits for Subway restaurants in Somerville. Given that once found, it only ranks one star, perhaps that's why!

Where are you finding this one-star review? I don't see it on Yelp.

Hmmm, now I can't find it. Maybe I mistook another listing for that one. I find one review on google now and it's 5 stars. Unfortunate that there's only one review but good that it's high, I guess?

Subway was by no means great food, but it was reliable, and the owners were really nice folks. And it was one of the only places in the square to get lunch for under $5.

Who buys pizza at "Dominos"? Well, me. Quite honestly, I much prefer their thin-crust pizza to the thick "Greek-style" pizza available at most places around here. And, again, they're reliable, fast, and cheap, which is way more than I can say about most of the pizza delivery available to Davis Square. I have absolutely no shame about eating Dominos pizza :)

I'm with you on Dominos. The pizza around here sucks and the quality at places is very inconsistent from one day to the next, so even if you get a good pie, chances are good that the next time you order you will get garbage. The average quality at the Davis Square Dominos is greater than the average quality of any other pizza place I've had here. Just because they are a national chain and national chains cause consternation for some people doesn't make it untrue.

I will say that the quality of our Dominos is better than any other one I've ordered from, so perhaps this location is an outlier with good owners.

I've probably never been to that Subway. But, I patronize a couple of others on a monthlyish basis. In general it is fast, good, cheap food that you can easily customize. Much better value than Quizmos, Bocolo, and so on.

Quiznos seems to barely exist anymore. The only one in Massachusetts is in Kendall Square. They used to be all over.

Right. I was probably thinking of D'Angelos (too).

I don't know if it's always had the same ownership, but the Domino's has been there since the first time I lived in Somerville, back in 1985.

HWhenever I walk down Elm Street, I wonder how that Domino's manages to stay open right right to Christos' Pizza.
