Star Market is having a sale on 4-packs of 9-Lives canned cat food -- 10 for $10 or $1 per 4-pack. It's usually $1.50 per 4-pack, so it's a pretty good deal...especially if your vet's told you to feed more canned food to your cat (like mine did).

Out of curiousity, why did your vet tell you to do so? My understanding was that canned food (outside of the ridiculously expensive stuff) is essentially garbage -- good for using as an occasional treat, but not for much beyond that?

Yeah, that's what I'd always heard, too. But apparently it has to do with recent research into cat nutrition, and there isn't enough protein in the dry food. It may also have to do with the fact that my boys are 11 and 14...but I've heard other friends with younger cats have been told the same thing.

Apparently, what is best now is to feed both canned and dry.

Since I have had two cats with dental issues (one who ate only canned food until I adopted her at age 6), I was surprised by this, too.

Canned food is mostly water, so it helps them keep their weight down. Nutritionally, I think they're about the same.
