ETA: Thank you for all the help everybody! I did find somebody who was very happy to get a piano for their new place, and I got additional inquiries, so if you've got a piano that needs a new home, there are people in Davis looking for pianos.

I have been trying for some time to find a good home for the upright piano in my living room, and have decided to make one last try before I just call GOT-JUNK or the like to have it removed.

The piano has good action and tone, and holds tuning well (was still quite playable 5 years after being moved into my living room with no tuning at any point). However, it is not a pretty piano, being scruffed up and dinged (originally classic black).

It is free to anybody who will take it away, or if there is a charitable organization that can give me a tax deduction for the cost of having the piano moved, I'm willing to arrange for movers. Please contact me at fenicedautun at gmail if you are interested.

[For those that are interested, this was a friend's piano who asked me to store it for 1-2 years as she found and moved into a new place. 3 years later I asked when she wanted it back, and she told me she had no intention of reclaiming it.]

Just a thought--did you try the school department? I bet they don't have much budget for musical instruments, but maybe they could use it. And maybe they could get city folks to move it.

Maybe give the Arts Council a call?

There's also that organization that puts pianos out around the city as art projects.

My friend runs this little operation: http://savethepianos.org/
It takes some time to schedule a pickup but he might be able to help you.

In addition to the suggestions below, there are numerous cities that have those public piano programs, whereby uprights are placed around cities for the public to play on. Not sure if there are any such cities in the Boston area, but it's possible.

That's coming back to Boston this fall, September 23 to October 10. Maybe send e-mail to the project manager, streetpianosboston@celebrityseries.org and offer yours?

If you recall the Boston take-over of art pianos back in 2013, the organization who ran it is bringing street pianos back this Fall. It mentioned "if you'd like to donate a piano..." On one of the pages, but it might be worth contacting the email on this page:

Good luck!
