Hi Folks,

Hoping for advice on this one. I have a place in Davis Square that I'm renting out and we have an old drier (not hooked up, but does work ok) rotting the basement. I'd love to get rid of it, but no one on craigslist wants it for scrap or use and every junk place I've called think that a single drier isn't worth their time to haul away. Dragging out to the curb and getting a ticket for garbage to pick up a large item isn't possible for a variety of reasons that I won't go into.

What other options do I have? Advice would be welcome - and if you've had to deal with this before living in the Davis Square area and have a recommendation of someone local who could help out, I'd appreciate it.

but it is the standard way to dispose of such a thing in Somerville. Could you hire a TaskRabbit, or just mobilize some friends, to move it out to the curb?

Or ask another Somerville resident to take it to their own curb?

I'm surprised you couldn't get someone on Craigslist to come. Just a few months ago I posted a curb alert on Craigslist about a dead dryer, put it out in the driveway while we were in the process of moving, and metal scrappers showed up, loaded it into a trailer, and drove away before I even noticed they were there. :-}

This has also been my experience, sometimes with items smaller than a dryer.

I could get a scrap guy off craigslist to get an appliance same day easy. That it has to be carried outside may be a little issue, though coming out of a basement, esp if unfinished is not a big deal unless there are some terribly narrow doors and turns. Many of them have dollies. You can also use appliance straps to get it out of basement, requires 2 people.

If you need help finding a scrap guy, PM me and I'll give you my guy's #, but you'll need to clarify what the issues are.

Every time I've put anything metal and/or mechanical out on the curb, the scrappers pick it up well before trash pickup time. Those guys are vigilant.
