I'm looking for a guitarist to play for an event I'm planning at the Courtyard Marriott in Fitchburg, MA on Friday, May 14th from 8pm-10pm. (Sorry, I know this gig isn't in Davis Square, but we have good music here, so it seemed a good place to start looking).

It's a meet and greet for children's book writers, so we're looking for some music to make people feel relaxed, yet not something so loud that people can't talk. We're looking at multiple options to try to figure out who might be the best fit for our event so demo tracks would be very helpful! If you know of someone, please email me! Or if you are a guitarist, please send your rates along with demo if available.

Best,
Edith

When we got married, we talked to the music department of a local university near the locale of the wedding. We found a wonderful person to play the harp at the wedding. She was a student who did that sort of thing freelance if given the opportunity, complete with demos and samples of music for us to select.

good luck

Thinking along the same lines as [livejournal.com profile] koshmom: Boston is chock full of music schools (Berklee, Longy, New England Conservatory just off the top of my head). I imagine all of them provide a way for potential gigs to find their students: For example, the first google hit on berklee hire student (http://www.google.com/search?q=berklee+hire+student) is a Berklee-related FAQ (http://www.berkleebpc.com/faq.html) whose last entry is "What department should I call to hire Berklee musicians for a private event?"

You should definitely call the Musician Referral Service at New England Conservatory: http://necmusic.edu/mrs

You may get better response if you post this request to the Somerville Arts Council e-mail list.

Matchbook.org is a local online resource for performing artists and groups. You can search for musicians under "Find an Artist". I found and hired a marimbist (sp?) via Matchbook a few years ago.

You'd get lots of responses from a Craigslist post.

You might drop in at Ball Square Find Wines and talk to Jay Tally, who is a guitarist studying at Longy.
