I just moved from a cool place in Davis to an even cooler place in Davis.  Had planned to leave the mattress and boxspring for the person moving in (they wanted it), but they bailed on the landlord and current roommate at the very last minute . . . and I feel obliged to make sure the place is clear of anything that belonged to me.

Queen-sized, and I'm trying to find a donation method, or someone who wants it, et cetera.

The only reason I didn't take it, well, two reasons, are that I wanted to put the cost of having someone help move it into something new . . . and that a queen-sized boxspring won't fit up the stairs of the new place.

Any suggestion on how to donate a mattress and boxspring ?  Or any takers ?

Hi, I live in Davis and about 2 years ago called up the Salvation Army (I believe the Central Square branch but check the Salvation Army website) and asked if they would take my mattress/boxspring/frame. As long as it's clean and in good shape they will. They came with a truck and two men carried it out right from my apartment. It really couldn't have been easier and now someone less fortunate has a place to sleep.

Regardless of how clean you are, your mattress might contain bed bugs. Boston (the city) would rather you not recycle mattresses and the like (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/02/us/02boston.html).

At times, thrift stores will not take or will discard donated mattresses, especially in high-bed-bug regions.

Your best bet is probably going to be freecycle or Craigslist.

It seems a shame. Heat is all you need to kill bed bugs, but a mattress won't fit in a clothes dryer. I wonder if it would be viable to run a commercial heat treatment service where you throw a big batch of stuff in a giant low-temperature oven overnight. :-)

This is exactly what some companies do. They have a truck that is essentially a low-temperature oven. They park outside your house and put your stuff in it for a few hours. Voilà, no more bedbugs.

Problem is, it's impossible-ish to do in Somerville. Apparently, it's required to have a full fire detail etc. to have the service, but perhaps they've changed it. Also, it can be fairly expensive and "low-temperature" means ~170 degrees.

This group in Acton will take mattresses but unfortunately they don't pick up. In general they take many things that often the other charities will not. http://www.hgrm.org/

sucks they don't pick up. i also just left a mattress/boxspring behind in my apartment largely because i couldn't transport it, as i'm sure is the case with many people.

They pick up in towns closer to Acton. I think that Lexington is as far east as they come.

I desperately want a bigger bed (I have a twin now, ugh, but can't afford a new one right now) but I have no way to transport it :( Good luck!
