I am looking for a room for rent for at least the next six months, possibly longer.  The max I can afford is about $350 per month.  I've grown up in Cambridge and work in downtown Boston.  I have no car, so being near some sort of public transportation is important.  I have no pets.

I think that may be a pipe dream. I had a friend who lived in Roxbury in communal housing, and I think she even paid $500/month. You may want to look on craiglist for ads seeking rent/work exchanges.

Yeah, about $450-$500 is the going market rate in the better parts of Roxbury for a room with a door.

It might be doable or close to doable with a super small room. Presumably a temporary type person is not bringing many belongings. Good luck.

It sounds like you'd be renting a converted porch-turned-room, and even that, likely with a 20+ minute walk to the red line...

The apartment above mine in Somerville is 4 people, $350/person + utilities, and it's nice, with good-sized rooms and even a driveway and garage. It does exist!

...Sadly, this is not an offer to the OP. They have no openings now and are moving soon. Just wanted to make sure you know it's not hopeless!

If you’re posting in DSLJ, I can’t imagine you’d be up for a room in Quincy, but if you would, I’ve got one. I couldn’t go quite as low as $350/mo., but I could go as low as $400, and all utilities are included and there’s no security deposit, so if you were expecting to have to pay utilities that might be plausible. Let me know if you’d like to know more.

Well, you are on the Red Line. And a nice guy (the good kind of nice guy. Not the other kind). Which might count for something.

If you are still looking, I know of a "mothers helper" situation in Brookline that I think is still open. They are looking to have someone pay rent and work for about an hour a day 6 days a week helping the parents with kids and dinner prep and stuff. There are two lovely young-elementary age kids. They were looking for someone to pay $450 but they would give fully free utilities and food. They also are willing to negotiate possibly lower rent in exchange for more hours.
