De-lurking and signing up for an LJ account so I can put this out to the community.

I'm moving in with my girlfriend in December and, for a variety of reasons too complicated to go into here, I need to find a new home for my beloved cat (shown in my profile pic). I'm heartbroken about this but it is the only solution.

My cat is 10 years old and full of love. She's also huge - between 22 and 24 pounds. Because of this, she's on a special food to address kidney issues - without it, she's prone to UTIs. Other than that, she is healthy (no diabetes and blood work is almost always normal) and happy.

All of my friends in the area either have cats or allergies, and because she is a "special needs" cat, I'm loath to bring her to a shelter. I'm wondering if anyone out there is a) interested in adopting her or b) aware of any good organizations that might help me place her in a loving home.

If you're interested in adopting: it's important that she is the only cat in the household (she has gotten on well with dogs in the past) and remains indoors.

Thanks!

If we did not have our own princess of the house, I would gladly take the beast. I have admired her from afar for quite a while now :)

Actually, it's not that tough to find a no-kill shelter. I used to volunteer at Broken Tail Rescue, which is the shelter that uses the cat cages in the petsmart at alewife. It's no-kill (unless the animal is, say, dying a slow painful death of cancer) and the animals get veterinary attention, weekly if they're on display at petsmart. If not on display, they're living with a carefully screened foster family. That's also where I got my babe, shown in my profile pic :)

Good luck! Let me know if you'd like any more info.

No-kill shelters have limited capacity, though, so every cat brought to one effectively dooms another cat there won't be room for. It's always a better option to find a home. A no-kill shelter should be the last resort. (Which seems to be how the OP feels, too.)

If you cannot find a home for her, I recommend The Pat Brody Shelter For Cats (www.catsontheweb.org). I got my kitty there years ago. It is a private no-kill shelter in central MA that deals with elderly and special needs cats. The shelter is a free roaming space full of kitty furniture with a screened in yard and it is run by... well.... cat ladies. If a cat doesn't find a home, it lives out its natural life span in that space. The only time they use cages is for quarantines.

I wish I could take her but Sam (pictured in the icon) would NOT BE PLEASED as he has been king of this castle for over 10 years.

The Pat Brody Shelter is great. I volunteered there when I was in high school and the cats were very well cared for.

I used to volunteer there back a decade ago and I recommend them highly. Great people and they'll do right by your kitty. Please give them a nice big donation, because they need the money.

I have a 15 year old four-legged diva and a 10 year old that thinks he's a kitten.

She is lovely, I hope you can find her a good home!

Wherever she goes, you should supply the new home with a significant donation to provide for her care.
