JUST FOUND: beautiful blue and white budgie. We found him happily eating grass on the sidewalk on Mead Street, just off of Cameron. He's got very nice dark blue shoulder patches.

We've currently got him/her in a cat carrier eating millet and some of the grass from the sidewalk. He's pretty tame, though does not seem to enjoy being held. It seems like he is used to people and not a wild bird.

We do own two budgies already, which is why we agreed to take him in (as opposed to our nice neighbors who have never owned one before) but we only have a small cage AND we have two cats. Right now he's safe in a closed room, and we can keep him for a little bit, but obviously if he belongs to someone we'd like to reunite them. The Animal Rescue League is closed for the evening so it looks like we'll be keeping him overnight.

I've never found a bird before so if someone has any other ideas for trying to locate the owner please let me know! I'm going to try twitter and Universal Hub.
I can be reached at lizzylee@gmail.com if you know who owns this pretty little bird!

I'm sensing a bird-related theme here :)

When I posted about the pigeon yesterday, someone suggested calling animal control and also contacting Angell memorial. If someone is missing it, they might put up flyers, but birds can go a long way.

While they can go a long way, budgies often don't. Thus someone might be weeping about their lost bird. On the other hand, someone might have had a budgie as a pet while in college, and couldn't take it home with them when the school year finished, so they "freed" it to die of hunger/get eaten.

Budgies often, but not always, stay close to where they escaped. It might be worth putting up fliers. Does the bird have a leg tag? If it has a tag, you can go to some pet stores with the number and see if they can identify it. Tags generally have information about the breeder and some pet stores keep track of the tags and who they sell the bird to.

Also, try posting about the bird at Talk Budgies (http://talkbudgies.com). There's probably a higher probability that a budgie owner reads that than that one reads LJ.

Be sure to keep it quarantined away from your birds and be sure to wash your hands after interacting with the guy. You don't want to infect your flock if he's sick.

Oh good! I saw him yesterday around 6, perched on the fence of a house on Holland St. (I don't remember the street number, but I think it was maybe at the corner of Jay Street? One of the houses on the corner of Holland and a side street, between Teele and Davis.) He flew off when I got too close, but looked like he was sticking close to the house. I rang the doorbells of the house, but the only person who came to the door said he wasn't theirs.
