Jewish Story Telling, Sunday March 19, 7:00 PM

March 4, 10:00 AM - Shabbat

Join us for services, children's book club and a potluck, dairy/vegetarian Shabbat lunch. Services at Havurat Shalom are egalitarian, lay-led and usually involve a lot of singing. The potluck is truly pot luck - no arranging of the dishes in advance. After lunch, a class about the "Or Chadash" prayer. This is the first of 3 classes on this topic. Interested attendees will figure out when to hold the remaining 2 classes.

March 11, 7:00 PM - Purim

The wittiest spiel for blocks around, home made hamantashen, groggers, the whole Magilla - Havurat Shalom's Purim party is great fun and you should join us! And of course, there'll be spiel between reading chapters of the Book of Esther. As an extra treat this year, Larry will leyn a chapter of the Magilla in Yiddish! Costumes encouraged, but not required. We'll be providing a pizza and salad dinner, suggested donation $5.

The Havurah is again participating in Yad Chessed's Purim tzedakah program. Yad Chessed provides food assistance and other aid to Jewish families in need. Half the funds we raise on Purim will go to Yad Chessed, and half to the Havurah's own tzedakah fund. Last year we raised $487. Help us top that number this year!

March 17, 6:00 PM - Bike and Build and singing

Join us for an evening of sharing a potluck dinner, singing and learning about Bike and Build. Carolyn Flax, who grew up singing in the Reform movement, will lead us in singing and tell us about her upcoming cross-country bike trip with Bike and Build to benefit affordable housing. Bike and Build is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for the affordable housing issue. Since it began in 2002, Bike and Build has engaged over 3,300 riders and has donated more than $6.2 million and 225,000 build site hours to affordable housing groups throughout the country. Starting on May 11, Carolyn will bicycle from Jacksonville, FL to Monterey, CA with a group of 30 young adults. Along the way, they will meet with local residents, present about housing issues, and build homes with local affordable housing groups. In order to participate in Bike and Build, each cyclist must raise $4,800. If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to Carolyn’s trip, please visit https://bikeandbuild.org/rider/9226

Saturdays March 18 and 25, 7:00 PM - Bystander Intervention Training

Do you want to be prepared to help, if you see someone being bullied? How can you help? How can you do this safely? How can you do this without risk of making things worse? Bystander Intervention techniques teach ways to reduce the impact of aggressive social behavior. Taught by Rona Fischman. 1st of 2 class meetings. REGISTER here: https://ronafischman.com/registration-venue-a/. Cost: $15-$30.

Sunday March 19, 7:00 PM - Jewish Story Telling

Havurat Shalom will be joined by the Jewish Storytelling Coalition in a story swap. This is where listeners (tales need listeners) and tellers gather to honor the teller and the tale. Some tellers will be experienced and others not at all. The tales can be from the centuries of lore from Midrash to Modern times, or original, or personal tales. Preferably they will come from the Jewish experience of the teller. We invite persons of all ages.

(This will not be a pot luck dinner. But of course bringing nosh would be considered praiseworthy, and a bissel ice cream an act of kindness.)

So come, sit, listen, tell, enjoy.

cost: we'll pass the hat.
