this may be an offbeat request for the dsdw, but can anyone rec any books about the boston irish mob that don't focus on whitey bulger? asking for a friend. :D (actually i am.)
It was an interesting read. Definitely one man’s very personal view.- I wouldn’t take it as rote history, especially since there’s no small amount of hero worship for Winter himself.
For Boston mob in general, the Boston Public Library has some books that don't mention or don't focus on Whitey in their descriptions. Look for the subject headings "Organized Crime - Massachusetts - Boston" and "Mafia - Massachusetts - Boston". Some examples: "Boston Mob:The Rise and Fall of the New England Mob and Its Most Notorious Killer" (not Whitey, this is Joseph Barbazoa). Also " The Boston Mob Guide: Hit Men, Hoodlums & Hideouts".
Boston is a different library network, but you can register your Somerville-area card with them to borrow just like you do here.
But before running off to the BPL, check the Minuteman Library Network to see if one of its many libraries has the book you want. If so, they can deliver it to your local branch in Somerville (or Cambridge, Medford, Arlington, etc.)
The subject headings will be the same in most libraries. "Organized Crime - Massachusetts - Somerville" and "Winter Hill Gang" might also be worth trying.
my friend said irish mob. i think she's writing a screenplay? i have no idea. if the good books are about the mob in boston in general and not the irish mob in particular, well, she gets the recs she gets. :D the boston mob guide sounds like a guidebook of places where mobsters made deals and people got whacked, like it's full of walking tours or something. but it could be good.
