we're renovating and down-sizing a guest room with a nearly new king-size mattress. it's a "Beautyrest Recharge" in pristine condition (always had one of those fancy mattress covers) and probably has a cumulative total of 6-months use. obviously no bugs - cuz if my house had bugs i'd probably freak out and set it on fire. cuz i'm a bug-phobic drama-queen snowflake, le sigh.

ANYwho - anyone got a suggestion for disappearing it that doesn't involve a trash hauler ? it seems like such a shame to trash a nice, nearly-new thing. would love to give it away, or donate to a shelter, charity, etc.

Charities and shelters etc. cannot take mattresses because of MA laws designed to prevent the spread of bedbugs.

No, I don't think that's true; I think the rule is that you have to have a facility for treating (via heat?) all mattresses for bed bugs. That's certainly how it's possible for Rent-a-Center and like companies to rent beds, which I looked into last July.

I quickly just found two charities in MA that do take mattress and box spring donations, but they don't help the OP because they both only take queen-size and smaller, and one's pickup area is on the southeast MA and the other in central Mass.

Also, the MA Dept of Enviromental Protection runs a site called RecycleSearch for people looking to donate or recyle things, and when I searched on "mattress" the Salvation Army came up, and their profile page there does say they take mattresses, and do scheduled pickup. Haven't tried this so I don't know if it works. It also turns up UTEC Lowell which doesn't pick up in this area, but "Drop-off of mattresses is possible for a fee at UTEC's Lawrence location; please call ahead to schedule a drop-off."; and The Wish Project, in Lowell, which doesn't do pickup; and NewLife Home Refurnishing (doesn't take king-sized, can sometimes pick up in the greater Walpole area).

I tried to get that Salvation Army to pick up a mattress once, and they cancelled/rescheduled multiple times and the one time they did come, the driver didn't have all of the information I had given the office, so they couldn't find it.

So, they'll come get it in theory, but in practice, I had to find another way.
