Does anyone know of a person or place in the greater Boston area that will tan leather? A friend of mine's family hunts, and they always throw the deer skins away, which seems like such a terrible waste...

What do you want to use the skin for? Drums are made from rawhide and do not require tanning. Buckskin is brain tanned so unless you still have the stomachs and the brains to start with you would have to resort to other means. How ever you decide to tan them it wil lbe stinky stinky :)

I processed a moose two years ago at the end of my driveway to make a really really big drum. You should have seen the stares ;)

I mostly do rawhide and we salt the skins if we can't get around to them. It dries them out so you can soak them later and then finish the drum. I don't know what salt would do. The ony person that I know of that tans is Chas Terry in Wilton NH. He was the one you processed the other mooose from the hunt two years ago.
