Hi all,
My laptop just got stolen, and I'm going to try checking out some pawn shops in the area to track it down. I don't know of any, though, and they don't exactly have websites - any names and locations would be really helpful. Thanks a bunch!

Yep, I did, and he said that the detectives might go around to some pawn shops, but that I might have more luck, being a regular person. I guess the pawnshop people have a tendency to be less than forthcoming with law enforcement.

If you're feeling gutsy, first ask for a laptop like yours as if you're looking to buy.

Honestly, I think itsmore likely they would try selling it to a used computer store, or ebay. Off the top of my head-

Yeah, I'm looking on those places too, but I figure I'll cover all of my bases by looking in local pawn shops (if I can find any). Good tip about refining the search on eBay, I don't use it so I wouldn't have thought of that.

At my house, on Alpine St (between Highland & Brodway). We went to sleep really late, without locking the back door (we live on the first floor, so that was foolish) - the computer was in the living room and this morning it was gone. The strange thing too, is that on the coffee table there were wallets and an iPod and other valuable things, but they just grabbed the powerbook and left. It was less than three months old, too, so I'm really holding out hope of finding it again...

if it's a powerbook, make sure to contact apple. they may be able to notice if the powerbook needs to phone home to the apple mothership for something.

Gee I'm so sorry to hear that. :( I love PowerBooks.

In the future, you may want to consider laptop insurance (Safeware (http://www.safeware.com/) is who I use) or getting a STOP security sticker (http://www.stoptheft.com/site/index.php) on your laptop.

Also, if it's one of your authorized computers for playing purchased iTunes music, you'll have to go into iTunes and UNregister all your computers and re register the one(s) you still have. That or leave your laptop registered so that they can never play purchased music ever except for what you already have on there.

My apartment was robbed when I lived in Allston, and we found out from the Boston police that all pawn shops in the city of Boston are required to report all of their goods to the police and to hold them for 90 days before sale. I don't know if Somerville or Cambridge have laws like that, but it might be worth a shot to ask.
