it needs to be on public transit. i would also prefer non-leather.

I always have the best shoe luck at Poor Little Rich Girl, in Davis. It's not a shoe store -- it's a designer consignment shop which happens to have a lot of shoes -- but it's the only place outside the internet that I've found shoes in my size in years.

There's also The Tannery in Harvard Square, but that'll (probably) run more expensive than Teddy's. Also tends toward the trendy, so it depends on what kinda style you want.

Also, if you're looking for warm winter boots, rather than just pretty ones, there's an REI near Fenway Park; you can get there on the Green Line.

there's also the EMS in Harvard Sq, and several other stores selling footwears.

the EMS often has a clearance/returns/used area - sometimes very cheap and acceptable can be found.

I'd try Payless. There are a bunch near T stops in Cambridge and Boston. They often sell non-leather footware.

the tannery is expensive, but i got an awesome pair of waterproof winter boots there. they do have a pretty good selection. i think i paid $60 for mine.

On at least one occasion where I found myself bootless, T-dependent and in the midst of a howling blizzard, I took the red line to Downtown Crossing, and walked directly into Filene's Basement, which you can reach without going outside. Got a great pair of boots, too.

Somewhat off-topic, but it's useful to know about two other places where you can enter a shopping area from the T without going outside:

From Back Bay station on the Orange Line, you can walk through a tunnel into Copley Place mall.

From Prudential station on the Green Line "E" branch, you can walk directly into the Prudential Center mall.

And of course, you can also walk indoors between the Prudential and Copley malls.

I have a pair of rubber rain boots from Berk's in Harvard Square. Waterproof and very comfy when worn with thick socks. I love Berk's in general, though
