Moddy Tag Update

After getting back from my holiday travels, I found that a bunch of folks had e-mailed the mod address volunteering to be on a "tag team" to help with some back-tagging. That's awesome! (for some reason they went into my Yahoo bulk folder, which is why I didn't see them earlier.) The bad news is that I haven't figured out yet how the whole tagging moderation/ control panel/ shiny red buttons work, but I think cos or one of the other mods has.

I see people have been starting to tag their new posts, which is great. So, have you been able to create your own tags? That was, I believe, what we decided we wanted. If you've had any difficulty, hopefully we can get it squared away soon.

I do not understand how to create my own tags. If you can show me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Like I said, Ron, I don't yet know how to adjust the tagging settings. The question I was specifically asking was whether people who aren't mods have been able to create their own (which would entail simply typing any tag you want into the "tag" field). My question was weather non-mods are already able to do this, of if someone needs to figure out how to adjust the tagging settings.

Welcome back to Davis Square, Mare!

I've tried adding my own tags to posts, but they seem to disappear without explanation. However, I've seen other people successfully add new tags such as "local landscape" and "cars". Since I'm new to LJ, I assume that I just don't know what I'm doing and the other people do.

Are you adding them in the right field? When you go to make a post, you should see these first 5 fields:

Security
Text Formatting
Music
Mood
Tags

Type your tag into the "tag" field. If it gets swallowed up, then we'll have to look into adjusting the settings.

Yep. If I make a post and tag it with (for example) "laundry, local businesses", it will accept "local businesses" but ignore "laundry".

Last time I tried it, entered in the proper field, it ignored them.

This is the menu I get when I try to tag an old post (either one of my own, or anyone else's):

advertisement, bars and clubs, cars, civic, coffee houses, community announcements, development, diesel, events, free stuff, housing, local businesses, local landscape, local politics, meet-up, meta, news, parking, parks, public services, tags

If you use one of these tags, it appears to "stick". If you try anything else, it gets ignored. I think this can be fixed, but I don't know how to do it.

Gotcha. Well, as long as the mods have a tagging system (and we can select from that set), it seems like a good solution. Obviously people could propose new tags and they could be added, and that mod-control may be a bit better than completely free-form tagging.

I am doing a first pass of back-tagging right now. I started at the community's beginning and have worked my way up into early 2006. Just for consistency, I'd like to finish what I've started, but then invite you and other folks to discuss how to rationalize the tagging: splitting out some common categories from the current "business services", doing something about the dining/restaurants/local food overlap, etc.

Right now I'm thinking that davis_meta would be a perfect place to talk about tagging without cluttering the davis_square community. It has lain dormant for a year and a half, and is owned by prunesnprisms whom I have also invited to join the tag-team.

prunesnprisms has given me the go-ahead to use davis_meta for this purpose. See you there! I should be done with my first pass of retro-tagging within a week. Then I'll post a summary of what I've found and open things up for general discussion.
