hawkegirl's green Chrome brand messenger bag was stolen along with her laptop and wallet inside. she's a regular at Diesel. she had customized the bag with green leaves.
Assuming it's the same bag that hawkegirl posted about on bostoncycling, it was stolen from the Middlesex Fells Reservation Parking lot. Presumably from her car while she was biking.
during arisia, as i walked around the commons gardens, i noticed every other parking spot had broken window glass on the ground. i've never seen that there before. spooky.
It is a BAD idea to put down your bag and walk away from it at Diesel (or anywhere). The fact that you feel safe and at home there and trust the people who frequent it does not make you immune to things like this, really! I was there today and saw a girl get up and walk away from her purse and what seemed to be her diary or journal on three separate occassions, once leaving it where she couldn't see it at all for about 15 minutes. I say this only because it makes me sad to hear about things like this happening to people, and it usually seems to happen because they felt safe and happy in the location where they left their stuff, like "I trust everyone here, I come here every day, no one would steal this"
yeah. americans on the whole are really, really trusting people. i wish i weren't so paranoid, but after travelling a bit and contending with scammers and pickpockets in other countries, i instinctively have a hand on my back pocket when riding the subway or going up an escalator, etc, and it amazes me how women here will leave their purses swinging on their arms, wide open so i can see their wallets inside, while they're facing the other direction, oblivious. i mean, i like that in america i don't have to constantly be on the defensive about getting ripped off, but i think sometimes people here take their safety for a granted a little bit.

Date: 2006-01-20 08:34 pm (UTC)These does seem to be a wave of theft happening in the Davis area. I hate to see that happen, after so many years of feeling safe.
