i am apparently hibernating through the winter without getting a haircut, and i look fairly shaggy at the moment. i've got wavy hair, and have always had trouble finding a hairstylist who could cut it well.

i'd love some recommendations/reviews of local salons- hopefully not too expensive or pretentious, please.

There aren't any in Davis, but Dellaria salons are usually good in general. Also, I have wavy hair and just saw Dana at M Salon (Mass Ave by Porter Square) and he was terrific. Crap for styling, but once I got it home and had my way with it, a good cut. His cut was $45 and not at all pretentious.

Dellaria sucks. I had three of my worst haircuts ever from Dellaria.

I'm not quite sure what to tell you as I now go to a barber shop (I have a men's haircut) but when I had longer hair (down to my waist) I ONLY took advice from curly haired people with curly haircuts that I liked. People wiht straight hair have NO IDEA how bad a stylist can screw up curly hair.

i just got my hair cut by dana at m salon in porter. he was really nice and apparently has a lot of wavy/curly haired customers. it cost $45 and i liked my haircut -- i just said i wanted it left long, and he talked to me while he was doing it and got my ok for stuff and i thought it came out well. a very low-stress experience :)

I like Mario's on Holland just outside of the square. They do a decent cut with long layers and only cost $25-30.

You must be looking at the wrong time. My wife and I are under 50 (by, oh, quite a bit) and get our hair cut there.

I tried Mario's on a lark a couple months ago and Mario did a very nice job. He'll also listen to you. My hair is wavy as well, though I had him style it straight because why the hell not as long as I'm there, right? :)

(Of course that was a silly picture for me to use, taken short after a swim in Walden Pond. :)

I like Salonika on Highland Ave. I've been going there for years and Soula is great.

I've been getting not-in-the-slightest-bit-reasonably-priced curly cuts in Harvard, and they're the only good haircuts I've ever had. If you decide you want an expensive haircut from curly-haired specialists, I can give you the name.

But reasonably priced? No. :(

I must admit I'm sorta curious. Though I did go to an expensive curly specialist once and it turned out to be a waste of money... and I like the cut I have now (Salon Bimala at Washington Square on the C line, nowhere NEAR Davis of course)... but I'm still curious. Esp. as I doubt I'll be trekking back to Washington Square for my next cut.

Andrea at Salon Femia (and her sister Daniella, when Andrea's booked) does great with my Jewfro, and they're right in Davis, reasonably priced, not at all pretentious.

Liquid Hair Studios. It's in the South End, but definitely worth the trip. I too have wavy (and very thick) hair, and they are the only place that has not only cut it the way that it should be cut, but has allowed me to have short hair that doesn't look like a pyramid. Also, it's cheap. $35 My stylist is Andrew.
