Loew's Fresh Pond cinema closing, at least for now

From reliable sources I hear that Loew's Fresh Pond Cinema will close after its early evening shows this Thursday night. AMC is taking over Loew's, and apparently this is not one of the properties AMC wants to keep.

I don't yet know whether this closing is permanent, or just temporary for transition to new ownership.

Just called to get more info, and got a real live person, much to my surprise. He says that the Loew's there is closing as of Jan 26. AMC wants to keep the location open but is running into some legal snags, so timing on that is slightly up in the air.

I'm amazed you managed to rouse a live person on the phone there. I tried calling there intermittently throughout the afternoon, and all I got was ring-ring-ring, no answer, no tape recording.

If they do keep it open, I hope they fix it up nicely. It's gotten pretty skanky over the last several years. :/

It's not one of the nicer theaters in the area, and I go to it primarily out of geographic and parking convenience.

iirc, it closed years ago (back when it was a two-screen theater, maybe mid/late 1980's?) but eventually reopened with more screens.

I also phoned the editor of The Alewife, a monthly North Cambridge newspaper, with this news tip. He put the closing on his paper's web site as a "rumor".

Yeah, it really does need some serious work. I'd rather drive out to Revere for big big screens, or take the T in to the Common for the urban movie extravaganza type experience.

Yep, That's what I've been doing ever since Loews Boston Common opened.

Which is sad, because I mean, Fresh Pond = teh nearby!

But it just wasn't worth it as it got nastier and nastier and they had consistent problems with sound and what not.
