We just got our first electric bill for 2006. The rate went up by 65%. Gah!!

Have other NSTAR Electric customers in the Davis area observed this? Had anyone gotten advance notice of a rate-hike this large? Any light the community can shed would be appreciated.

Note: to arrive at 65%, I took the "Basic Svc Fixed" constant from my 2/2/06 bill and divided it by the same constant in my 1/5/06 bill to get the ratio of the two numbers. Subtract 1 and multiply by 100 to get the % increase.

.12260/.07694 = 1.6454 = a 64.54% increase.

This approach factors out the different amount of electricity you might have consumed from one month to the next. We're just looking at what NSTAR charges per kilowatt-hour (KWH).

I would be interested in similar calculations from other NSTAR customers!

EDIT: I evidently missed an identical discussion here a week ago. Call me slow on the uptake this month.

I will call NSTAR's customer service during business hours and ask if there was supposed to be an increase in the "Basic Svc Fixed" portion between this bill and the last. If they say "Yes, 65%", then I'll find out how that came to pass in light of the rate cut in their press release. If they say something less than that, I'll ask them to correct the error in my bill. Stay tuned.

Ours (my two roommates and mine) went up about 50% I'm guessing, since we usually pay about $20 apiece (=$60) and it went up $30 this month (=$90). We were trying to figure out what the hell it could possibly be.

As of the latest electric bill, our cost has gone up by almost 56%. My "Basic Svc Fixed" cost per KWH is now the same as yours (0.12260), but I was previously paying slighly more than you were. (0.08131)
