Called customer service this morning. Was on hold for a very short time -- I was impressed. Someone who seemed fairly knowledgeable answered, and explained to my satisfaction that the "Basic Svc Fixed" was a pass-through of what NSTAR paid the generation facility for the electricity. She confirmed that my numbers for December and January were correct.

She did say that NSTAR provides information about other power suppliers on their website. That appears to be here. If you're around Davis Square your rate code is probably A1, but you can find it on your bill. The above link has a pointer to an "understanding your bill" page that will show you where to find it.

They don't show current rates, just contact info for various providers. Start with those closest to you, of course.

She also said that NSTAR tries to get the lowest rate for its customers. I'm going to call back to find out whether they change sources once a year, or once a day, or is it more of a basket of supply that shifts according to need. I'm not clear yet whether attaching to a specific supplier would be good or bad in terms of my bottom line. Though of course attaching to a Massachusetts supplier would be a social good.

It looks to me, based on their website that the rate for "Basic SVC Fixed" will remain in effect through June.
