According to this post at railroad.net, some major electrical problem happened tonight around 6:45 pm, involving a #77A trackless trolley and the overhead wires.

I came out of the subway around 7 pm and didn't even know any of this had happened. But the person who was supposed to meet me at Porter Square Books was caught in traffic on Mass. Ave. for over a half hour, and this was probably why.

ha--I totally saw this. It was a bit bizarre. The "explosion" was something like a gigantic flash bulb. When it went off then entirety of porter square lit up like the sun suddenly appeared.

It looked at first like a street light exploded, but then it happened again and again--3 or 4 times total. There was a *pop!* sound, but almost hollow--not particularly loud. I didn't stick around since it wasn't all that exciting--a bright light is all. I noticed the trolley then but didn't stick around to see emergency vehicles come. There was no fire or anything particularly exciting.

All this less than a hundred yards from the porter bookstore accident.

It's the Porter Square curse, I tell you.

"Final Destination: 4" will be filmed there, I hear.

That's what that was! I was walking away from the T stop towards Elm St. when I saw a flash of light and had no idea what it was. Thanks for posting that.

Ah! I was caught on the #77 in traffic and was wondering what all that was about.
