I'm thinking of trying to sell some pictures that I've shot over the last few years. I have a bunch of photographs from travels in Germany and around the Boston area. The idea is to present them some as singles and/or a group as a themed project, possibly putting them up in local coffee shops or cafes, selling for only a little more than cost. I wanted to know if anyone has attempted this before or knows of local businesses that are willing to put up local artist' work.

Most Starbucks will put up work, Someday Cafe does, probably Diesel does, too.

Alternately, there's a great way to get your stuff seen but it doesn't appeal to everyone, Illuminations at MGH (http://www.massgeneral.org/cancer/about/environment/illum/index.asp).

Not that I've had the guts to actually go out and do this much myself yet, but most of the coffee shops around hang artists' work (just go in and ask for the manager in a really friendly way, and if they question that or say there isn't one around, ask when the person in charge of what art gets hung will be in. Bring a few pieces with you). Try Diesel, Someday, Starbucks (any of them), 1369 Coffee House in Central Square, there's some new one in Watertown that recently posted to Craigslist looking for submissions.

There's also a few galleries around that seem like they may hang shows without the arist necessarily being a member of some kind. I think there's one right in the square, somewhere near the Rosebud and set back a little from the road (blanking on the name), the Arlington Art Center and Springstep (Medford) may take submissions.

Also, a couple artist cooperatives around do periodic juries of work to potentially show - Cambridge Artists Cooperative on Church St. in Harvard Square, and Sign of the Dove in the Porter shopping center by CVS. Blue Cloud next to True Grounds in Ball Square may also.

Also, I just found this site listing exhibition spaces by the Cambridge Arts Council (http://www.ci.cambridge.ma.us/CAC/resources_listings_6.html).
