Oh, good to know, thanks. I tend to forget about them, because the other place in the garage that does (did?) piercings, that little jewelery floater on the ramp, does such heinous work. But Chameleon is a different place, and I must not lump them in!
My experience with Chameleon (buying jewelry) was pretty unsatisfying, so I'd be disinclined to go to them for piercing. I think there's a place on Mass Ave called Redemption, but I don't have any firsthand experience with it.
I got the industrial set-up you've seen from Owen at Chameleon, and was very happy with the experience (and, consider, my other cart. piercings were done by Raelynn Galinna, and Owen compared favorably.)
I tried like heck to go someplace else, but the only actual other recommendations I got in Eastern MA were all for Tribal Ways, which isn't anymore, and everyone else I knew of had closed shop or returned to the west coast.
the current favored theory with cart piercings is to avoid a gun... and as most "non piercing" shops will use one, well, don't go there...
course, i'm one to talk - my only cart piercing was done in the maul, in 5 minutes 8 odd years ago, is every healthy and good you could want, and even stretched well. plus it was convenient and cheap, as as you asked, "low key".
just stock up on your cleaning regimine of choice :)
Heh. My base piercings are mall: Earring Tree, when I was thirteen. I don't remember where the second ones got done. The crappy not-Chameleon place in the Garage, maybe? But maybe Spokane or Philly.
I got my left ear pierced in a mall in 1984 when I was 18 and didn't know any better. (I don't think very many people outside the gay male leather crowd knew about it back then, but what do I know.)
If you're in Philly, I highly recommend Infinite, off of South St. I had a good experience there, although my g/f was kind of squicked and doesn't want to watch anymore. :-)
never use a gun. for anything. you can't sterilize it, and it gets blood spatter on it. squick. I wouldn't use one for earlobes. If I wanted (more) holes in my ears, I'd got to a piercing shop and have them do it.
I totally recommend avoiding Chromatic tattoo/piercing in Medford and not far from Davis. The guy did an adequate job but he has NO idea what good bedside manner is.
While its nowhere near Cambridge, if you're ever branching out, The Edge tattoo/piercing shop in pawtucket RI is awesome. Marria is the piercer and she's great.
The weird place in the Garage that's not Chameleon was bought out by Chameleon and now sells the jewelry for chameleon.
Both of the piercers at Chameleon are friendly, but some of the counter girls are total bitches.
I didn't realize about the nonsterility of guns, but honestly I wouldn't worry about guns if you just want a lobe piercing. I don't know, I saw the price for ear piercings in Chameleon and it's something crazy like $60... Not worth it for lobes, I think. Chameleon completely takes advantage of the fact that there is no competition.
yeah chameleon is nice, but they are waaay overpriced in my opinion i have been stretching my ears there for awhile, and while they are really friendly and helpful, they charge me ten dollars a stretch.
Ah, that explains it. When they did the piercing themselves they were horrible. They pierce my friend's nose with a gun and used an ear stud, which was too long and scarred her septum and left her with a nast damaged hole that took a long time to heal when she let it close up.
id have to agree with the Chameleon comments..I got my nose pierced there, no problems, and although they are expensive (in my opinion) when my nose piercing fell out, they re-pierced without charging. :)
