UPDATE: Station is now open again.

AIEEE!! This just in from MBTA.com:

Dude, I don't even have to take the T tomorrow, but I can acknowledge how much this totally BLOWS.

Question is, are trains operating to and from Alewife, and simply going through the closed Davis Sq. station without stopping, or does Red Line service stop at Porter tomorrow?

You are correct! It blows!

Thanks for the heads up though!

The T transit updates page:"Passengers seeking Red Line train service at Davis Station will take shuttle buses to Porter for north and southbound train service."

So I would guess it's running through. No guarantees on how quickly, or whether they'll change their mind....

When I left the station today around 8:30 pm, I saw a fair number of T hard-hat folks outside the Holland Street entrance. I also think I saw the Mayor there. Not sure what that was all about.

hmmm

Late Saturday afternoon, there was a fire truck outside the station, and squadrons of firefighters walking around purposefully.

Oh the irony -- we're moving to Davis Square in part to get away from the horrible T service in Allston/Brighton. Argh; it's following us!

Crap, I'll have to walk to Porter. Thank you for posting this! You saved me from being late to work.

the shuttles to porter were running quite regularly, and there were plenty of them, when i got to davis around 7:15 this morning. it seriously blows that the T is closed, but at least they seem to be on top of the alternate transportation.

the one day I don't read LJ before I leave the house!

At 6:50 this morning, it wasn't too bad to get to downtown. A little confusing, though. You'd think they could maybe put up a sign or something.

I bypassed it and walked the 15 minutes to Porter, which was quite crowded. There were T workers on the outbound platform informing people of the Davis closure and busing.

Wonder what's wrong...

The T has taken down the notice from their web site, so I assume it's open now.

It is open, according to the announcement on my train this morning, not five minutes after announcing people would have to use shuttle buses.

page B2 of today's Globe had a short announcement saying the station was to be closed "until an electric and water-related problem is fixed".

I didn't see this, and rode the T from Davis to Alewife with no trouble slightly after 9:00.

The Somerville News has a detailed report about this:

Somerville officials first responded to the station at 2 p.m. Monday when they received a report that a police communications relay was no longer operating. Entering the underground equipment room that housed the police switch, fire department communications lines and other electrical equipment, City officials found corroded equipment lockers with water running down the walls and pooling on the floor.

I was kinda hoping they had closed the Davis station to finally turn those busted-ass escalators into beautiful planters like I'd suggested.

Smart move -- given the weather, I opted for the bus, and it took HALF AN HOUR to get from Davis to Porter.

That's a peeve of mine, too. Why on earth are so many of the escalators broken so much of the time?

From: [personal profile] ron_newman
Was that mostly waiting time? It should only take 3 minutes to drive from Davis to Porter.

That was time on the bus, much of it spent inching along Mass Ave within sight of Porter.

broken elevators and escalators

From: [identity profile] mattdm [typekey.com] (from livejournal.com)
*Sigh* Because the T repeatedly goes with lowest-bid contractors, regardless of past performance or any ability of the bidder to actually provide the promised service. The elevator contractor, Kone, clearly can't keep up. When the contract came up for renewal, the MBTA promised they'd get someone better, but, surprise, they ended up resigning with Kone -- this time, with a _more generous contract_. Because hey, punch me again, and maybe it won't hurt this time. It's like the Breda cars on the Green Line....

Strange they would even use Mass. Ave. The 3-minute way to drive is Elm Street to White Street to Porter Square.

Department stores and malls never have broken escalators. The T should use whatever contractors the malls do.

the official story

The city of Somerville put out an official press release about this. It says the station reopened shortly after 8:30 am.

Thanks for posting it. When we heard about it this morning, I was hoping it had to do with the water that pours out of the light fixtures at either end of the platform. Water pouring from light fixtures just can't be safe!

It was frustrating because the puddles just kept getting bigger. The water had stopped for a while so I figured the problem was fixed but then it returned about a week later. Hopefully this time, it'll be fixed for good. But I'm not going to hold my breath. I really want to have faith in the T, but they make it so darn difficult!

Re: the official story

From: [identity profile] mistergoat.livejournal.com
Sure, that's the official story. But note that they neither confirm nor denyh the rumors that small aliens were wandering the station, wreaking havoc with the electrical systems due to the electric fields emanating from their bodies! Nor do they ever explain why the Mayor was seen glowing later in the day after visiting the site. Will we allow the powers that be to keep us from getting to the bottom of this? I should hope not!

(Sorry, was recently reading some conspiracy theory stuff, and it's just hard not to mock it. People REALLY argue stuff like this. It's amazing. But for the record, this is ajoke--please don't write me to say that I must be joking--I assure you that I am.)

Yep. A few weeks ago, I was on an 87 bus whose driver forgot to turn from Somerville Avenue onto Elm Street. I suggested that the driver turn right onto White Street and take that up to Elm, and he did. Some cars trying to go the other way had to back out, but we made it just fine.

(And if you're curious what made me come back to read your 3-year-old post ... it was this.)
