Hi there. I went to Easter dinner with my boyfriend's family yesterday and came home with a very sweet kitty addition to our family :)

We rescued an abandoned kitty that my boyfriend's sister was feeding and taking care of. He was apparently left out in the woods with 2 other cats (who she was also seeking a home for).

Anyway, I've made a vet's appt for him tomorrow at Porter Square Veterinary, but was curious as to the whole licensing thing. I looked on the City of Somerville page, but couldn't find anything and the search web page isn't loading for me.

Do I need to register/license him through the city? I googled and could only find information on neighboring cities.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I think that the only certificate you could ever ask to show is the rabies vaccine which the vet will give you. Otherwise, no license or registering for cats.

Yep. You get a rabies tag to put on cats' collars, but there isn't any license.

You might consider getting him "tagged". Most shelters don't let you adopt a cat until it has been micro-chipped. This involves putting a little chip (about the size of a grain of rice) in the back of its neck so that it can be identified if it gets lost without its collar.

This isn't required by the city, and it may not be at all necessary if you keep your kitty indoors at all times, but if there's any chance he might sneak out you should think about it. It's really the only way that the city can help you find your cat if it ever gets lost.

some landlords will also ask for proof of the cat being spayed/neutered, so hang onto the receipt or whatever when you get that done.

It also serves as an antenna, allowing your cat to contact the mothership for advice on what spastic, unpredictable personality quirk to adopt next.

At least, we assume this explains our cat's behavior :).

I think technically you're supposed to pay about $8 to the city, ISTR getting a form for that along with my census form once or twice, but I've never sent that one back in despite having 2 cats.
