Fireworks?

um....why?

here i am on the somerville/arlington line trying to watch Las Vegas (shut up, its been a long week, and since Six Feet Under isn't on anymore, Josh Duhamel is a decent replacement for Peter Krause) and there are definately some pyrotechnics going on somewhere.

They were at Tufts. To celebrate the university's 154th anniversary.

I'm between Porter and Davis (at Hancock & Summer), and I heard them, too.

We're just off Powderhouse and can hear them too. We figured maybe some kind of end of semester thing at Tufts.

It's the "Spring Fling." (At least I'm pretty sure it is, because they have up all the fences they always do for Spring Fling). AKA, the night the most undergrads end up in the hospital with alcohol poisoning. Or having been drugged.

So glad I don't have to be an undergrad again!

It's an annual celebration known as "Tuftonia's Day"

It included a small "carnival" with cotton candy and attractions and such, and a bbq, and fireworks. It happens every year.

Spring Fling is tomorrow, with outdoor concerts all day.

Glad to know that means I'm not crazy! I was at work (Arlington Heights) and swore I could hear this odd popping noise around that time. I looked out the windows, I debated whether it was the kids upstairs, I thought I was senile. If I'd known it was fireworks, I would have just gone outside.

the only reason I knew about it in advance was an ad in the Somerville Journal, page 9. But I doubt most people ever saw it.

I was at Gargoyle's and so I couldn't hear them, but I did notice students dressed for something special walking around on Elm Street.

It's a special weekend for us, and as a (former) member of the programming board that puts on these shindigs, we do do our best to let the area residents know they will be going on. My apologies to the dog owners, I know my (huge) golden retriever tries to fit under the (tiny) coffee table every 4th of July. As for the rather snipy alcohol poisoning and drug comments, there's a lot more to us and what we do here than that. I hope you have the chance to experience some of the more positive things we do, whether it be your children that come to Halloween on the Hill, Kid's Day, or any of the other innumerable children's programs, or if you have the opportunity to come to a lecture, performance, or conference that the undergraduates have planned and carried out. If you're a Guster fan, maybe you got to hear strains of their live performance today, or had a moment to appreciate the beauty and majesty of a free, huge, professional fireworks display in your neighborhood.

This community might be a good place to post and let people know what's coming up. I live on Powderhouse, heard the noise but had no idea what was going on.
