If it's already been asked...sorry. :)

My partner and I just got a puppy. Yahoo! She rocks (here's a plug for the org that rescued her up to NE www.saveasato.org ). Anyhow, now the fun begins. We need a trainer.

Can anyone recommend a local trainer who uses positive reinforcement? Also, what do they charge? We don't have a car, so someone in the Ball/Davis/Porter area would be best, but I'll take whatever you got.

Thank you! And maybe we'll see you around!

I would love to come over and play with-- er, train *g* your puppy with you. I have two dogs and have been clicker training for about seven years now. (The book you will want is Karen Pryor's Don't Shoot The Dog-- very readable introduction to operant conditioning.)

Welcome to Somerville, Maggie!

You might also want to post your question about local dog trainers on the Somerville Dog Owners Group forum: www.somdog.org/forum.

There was a discussion about positive trainers (http://somdog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=91) about two months ago in the "Dog Talk (http://somdog.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=2)" forum.

I have taken clicker-training classes with my standard poodle, Strummer (http://www.dogster.com/?40501), at Canine University (http://www.canineuniversity.com) in Malden. A car is definitely necessary to get to Canine U. What about the New England Dog Traning Club (www.nedtc.org)? Their classes are at the Cambridge Armory, 450 Concord Avenue, about a mile and a half walk from Davis Square.

If Maggie has the strength and stamina (and the ability to walk on a loose lead!) by May 29, you should walk her in the Memorial Day Parade (http://www.somdog.org/join_us/volunteer_opportunities/666.php) with the Somerville Dog Owners Group !

Parade date
