A girl in my neighborhood stuck the letter below in my mail box. I can't take the cat, since I'm also allergic, but her note touched me enough to inspire me to try and help out. Thus, sharing her letter here:


Do you need somebody to love?

My name is Elyssa and I am a neighbor of yours, living on Lincoln St.

I have a very sweet 2-year-old male cat named Jasper who needs a good, loving home. Recently my condition of asthma has gotten worse, and I am forced to give Jasper away.

I would hate to put him in a shelter, but no one I know seems to want a cat. Since many of the No-kill shelters have closed, I don't know what to do.

Won't you give Jasper a home?

About Jasper:

Jasper is a black-and-white, large male, sweet cat who loves to have his stomach rubbed. He will roll on his back when you get home and purr when he sees you. Jasper sleeps on your bed at night and loves to curl up on your lap to be petted. He is low-key and laid-back but enjoys a good game of Chase The Rolling Object from time to time. He is also an excellent hunter and mouser if the occasion arises. Jasper rewards love with sweetness and loyalty.

The animal rescue league in South Boston is a no-kill shelter. I would take him but my older female cat prefers other females. =/

I wish I could take him, but I already have two adult males. More than two qualifies you as a crazy cat lady. ;-)

You know, I thought they were too, but I was recently told that's not the case. Apparently, there ARE Animal Rescue League shelters that are no-kill, but the Boston branch isn't one of them. Of course, if you have seen or heard definite evidence that they ARE a no-kill shelter, please let me know.

Oh dear. I grew up with a male cat named Jasper and so wish I could take this one but my female cat is rather ornery. Sniff. I'll think about it though and bookmark your post for a few days.

Pawsafe (http://pawsafe.org) has a great local no-kill cat shelter. There's an online form (http://pawsafe.org/surrenderqacat.html) for getting on the surrender waitlist. (The shelter was formerly known as Safe Harbor for Animals.)

And if you're looking for a cat, there's a list with pictures (http://pawsafe.org/cats.html) of the kitties looking for homes - it's kitten season, so beware of the cute!

Thanks for posting about this place. Our beloved BooCat passed away a few months ago. We've only recently been able to think about getting another cat. We're in the process of moving at the moment and had decided to get another cat (maybe two) once we were settled. We'll definitely look at Pawsafe first.
