If you're parking in Harvard Square, please use caution entering University Place garage. I was almost killed there tonight when a car came speeding around a corner entering the garage. This is not hyperbole, it was actually a very, very close call and I have been shaken up all night. There is no safe pedestrian entrance so if you're going to use this garage please be very, very careful. x posted to [livejournal.com profile] cambridge_mass and [livejournal.com profile] davis_square and [livejournal.com profile] harvard_square

there's at least one pedestrian entrance, through the building above it.

Ugh, this warning should apply to about 90% of Boston drivers. I can't stand the way people drive here. Total disregard for rules and order. And lives.

People always say that, but in my experience, this is a relatively good city for pedestrian-friendly drivers. Try getting someone to stop for you in a crosswalk in Chicago!

both as a pedestrian and as a cyclist, I'd have to agree. Drivers up here are aggressive to each other, and there's some percentage everywhere that are just dumb, but they're not actively hostile to pedestrians like in the Midwest (I'm from Cleveland, originally.)

There's actually a lot of regard for rules -- it's just that those rules aren't necessarily the law.

My husband taught me to drive here after I'd been bike commuting here for a few years and absorbed Boston road rules pretty thoroughly. It freaked him out, because he's from New Jersey where everything is very orderly, but he had to admit the things I did made sense in context, even if they weren't his choices ;).

My dad, a very conservative driver from West Virginia, stares at me like I have two heads when I give him driving directions around here.

But anyway, the point is, there are definitely rules. There are very predictable rules. They're just not the ones you want.

That reminds me of some study that was all over the news a few days ago. About how Massachusetts scored near the bottom on this nationwide driver's knowledge test.

But, look at some of the questions, ex. the one about left-hand turns. I dont think there is a choice there applicable to Boston.

Perhaps we need to make a "Chitlins Test" about how to drive in Boston.

It would be very fun to draw up the "rules" for driving in boston. The two things I always tell my out of town friends: PAY ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING(as cars and people and bikes come out from every conceivable direction). and DRIVE WITH CONFIDENCE (Even if you have no clue where you are going)
