Group for the Self-Employed/Freelancer
Jun. 12th, 2006 12:40 pmHi everyone! I'm new to Davis Square and to LJ.
After seven long years in grad school, I'm embarking on a career as a
self-employed IT consultant while pursuing my hobbies in art and
psychology. I'd love to meet more people in the area who are
self-employed (or are pursuing their own independent projects in one
way or another). Does anyone have any suggestions on where or how I
can meet them? I know, this description probably fits 1/2 people who
live in Davis, but I can't exactly stop strangers on the street.. :) If
you are one of these people, feel free to drop me a line!
Also, I'm forming a social group for self-employed/freelance
women in the area. Here is more info:
Do you work on things you love but feel isolated during the day? Do
you sometimes envy your 9-5 friends for their automatic social
interactions? Do you enjoy eating lunch with others but find yourself
doing the grab-and-go? Well, I've felt all of the above and I've met
a couple of other women who feel the same way. We've decided to form
a women's social group to share with one another the unique
excitements and challenges of being self-employed.
Picture this:
On Monday morning, you get up and meet up with Emily (fictional),
who lives right down the street, for a 40 minute power walk and chat
about your plans for the day.
On Wednesday, you get up in the morning, balanced your books and made
a few client calls. Around 11:30, you meet up with Vicky (a freelance
photographer), Sarah (a consultant for non-profits), and Elaine (a grad
student in psychology, all fictional by the way) for lunch at a little
Thai restaurant on Mass Ave.
On Thursday, Jody calls in the morning, she was feeling a little
lonely in her home office and was wondering if you want to come over
in the afternoon and work together, and BTW, there's a big piece of
German chocolate cake waiting in the fridge.. You figured, she's got
wireless, I'll just bring over my laptop and reply to all those emails
clogging up my inbox. Plus, I haven't seen Jody for two weeks and was
wondering how she did on her first trade show..
Right now, the group consists of me, an aspiring photographer (she's
starting an apprenticeship in b&w photography), and the owner of a
small marketing firm. If you'd like to join us, please reply to the
post with your contact info or you can reach me at: anyuan at cs dot
umass dot edu. Hope to hear from you!

Date: 2006-06-12 07:34 pm (UTC)I don't know if I fit completely, as I have a couple of part time jobs and am also a student, but I do own my own consulting company www.lavendergirlconsulting.com and teach ballroom, latin and swing dance (not through a studio, so that's like a little company, too)
thanks for the great idea!
great fit
Date: 2006-06-12 08:24 pm (UTC)I will send out an email later in the week to schedule a time for everyone to meet. If you are a busy person, we can always try to find overlapping activities that people in the group share.
