I am trying to find a link for what time within the city you can start do to contractor type of work. I have some workers on my street who have been banging and doing major work since 730 this morning. My fiance said you can get fined for that, he used to know what time it was (he is a contractor) but he forgets he thinks it is either 9 or 10 on weekends, does anyone know where I can find this info online. I cant sleep damn it!

You can find the Somerville ordinances online here (http://www.municode.com/resources/gateway.asp?pid=11580&sid=21)

According to Division 2 Sec. 9-116 construction work can start at 7am on a Saturday, but is prohibited on Sundays. Sorry for your sleep.

(3) Construction. It shall be unlawful to operate or permit the operation of any tools, piledrivers, hammers, or equipment used in construction, drilling, or demolition work between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday, and anytime on Sunday, such that the sound therefrom creates a noise disturbance.
(4) Domestic power tools. Operating or permitting the operation of any mechanically powered saw, sander, drill, grinder, lawn or garden tool, or similar device used outdoors in residential areas between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. on weekdays, or between 9:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and state and federal holidays so as to cause a noise disturbance.

Yes. I'm pretty sure that the heading of subsection (4) "Domestic Power Tools" means that it's talking about a resident working with power tools on his or her own. So I can't trim the hedges or use my tablesaw between 7am and 9am, but a contractor using "any equipment used in construction" could start on 7am on a Saturday.

You could call your alderman and ask for clarification I suppose.

(I do feel your pain, for some time the house across the street from mine was only worked on from 7-9am. What's up with that?)

because I believe it is 9am on saturdays in Cambridge (so the contractor had 2 jobs, one in somerville aand one in cambridge--a decent system).

fyi: you can violate this ordinance at least a couple times before getting an actual fine. The guys next to us have been working every day, including memorial day and sundays, for the last few months. They've been relatively courteous so I'm guessing no one's complained and that's the only way these things are ever enforced.
