Hosed-bud

I can't express how much I wish The Rosebud would go under new management.

Yet another completely crapful dining experience last night when [livejournal.com profile] pheromone and I settled for Rosebud because Spike's was closed. Everything was wrong, as it usually is there. Every time I go back I leave kicking myself for wasting a meal's worth of money in a hopeless establishment.

Before getting myself started, I should mention this: being from the Mid-Atlantic, I have big issues with "diners" that don't really serve diner cuisine. Diner is a cuisine, meaning to most people; patty melts, milkshakes, club sandwiches, chicken baskets, breakfast all day, and bottomless cups of coffee.

Kelly's makes an attempt at that. Rosebud doesn't, and it was a big disappointment the first time I went to see their yupped-out dinner menu that would be better suited for a midling hotel restaurant. Things I've ordered, especially from the specials listings, have ranged from meh to spit-out-awful.

What was wrong just last night:

*addled, forgetful service
*brought cole slaw instead of fries
*fries overdone
*no Tabasco on Tabasco onion rings
*no water refills
*refused to make grilled cheese (okay, I'll let that one slide since restaurants aren't obligated to cook off-menu. But grilled cheese should be on any diner menu.)

[livejournal.com profile] pheromone, tell me if I forgot anything. What bothers me is that we have arguably one of the most beautiful diner cars in America sitting right there, and it sucks. I routinely wish management would be taken over by a real diner family who knows how to cook and who knows what an actual diner experience ought to be. Glad I live nearer to Kelly's.

Yes I know, some of you love The Rosebud, and I respect your opinion. But I said last night that I was going to voice mine, so there it is.

Blech.

Do they not do breakfast all day?

I've only gone a couple times, in the mornings, for breakfast (clearly). It's always been pretty ok.

Next time you go, be sure to ask them to hold the meh.

For 8 years Davis Square has been the site of many dinners for me. A while back (3 years), I decided to skip Rosebud, their service tested my patience and their menu is uninspired. If I am in need of brunch, I prefer to walk to Renee's Cafe and deal with the service there since they have a yummier brunch.

They do breakfast until 3pm, although if you go at 2:30 they've already "shut off the water" for poached eggs, etc. and have usually run out of this or that breakfast meat.

I don't even like breakfastfood and I think that's crazy

if you knew you didn't like it there, why bother going back?

I've been there twice, once for brunch, once for dinner. Both sucked and I've never been back.

I was disappointed with their dinner food. I liked their breakfast stuff ok, but it didn't wow me.

I miss the EverReady in Poughkeepsie. *sigh*

There's a great joint in Watertown, though, that does awesome lamb sausage flavoured with fennel and orange peel. Mmm.

Nope. They have separate breakfast and lunch/dinner menus.

They do have an omlette on the dinner menu, though.

I was just introduced to greek lamb sausage with orange peel by my greek bf. They have it at the Greek Corner restaurant at Dudley and MassAve, which is about a block from where the bike path crosses MassAve, a short walk from Davis.

I've said this before, but this seems an opportune time to share that the owner still owes me a tall latte from the Someday. The latte was with me as some friends and I waited in line outside on a particularly miserable day, and was the only thing that really kept me in line because, well, cold and wet powers combined tend to drain me of queue tolerance pretty quickly.

When we got seated he came out of nowhere, grabbed my cup and stashed it behind the bar. A little surprised, I asked him what he was doing.

"You can't bring outside drinks in here."

"Ok, fine," I said. "I'll finish it outside."

"No. You can have it back when you're finished eating."

It would have been one thing if he had said something and allowed me to deal with it, but this approach was something that one would do to a misbehaving child. Needless to say, I've never gone back.

Wow, I'd have been like, "I'm done now. For good. Buh-BYE!"

I've had nothing but bad experiences there, too. After the second time I decided never to go back. It really is a shame, though!

I've never considered eating in a restaurant to entitle one to use a laptop. I see many reasonable complaints above about the Rosebud, but I'm not sure this is one of them.

why shouldn't one be able to use a laptop? do you feel the same way about reading a book?

Despite the uninspired food and the poor treatment of customers, the place thrives. I wonder what kind of deal he made with the lords of the underdark...

Somerville seems to be the home for bad service. This sort of nonsense goes on at a few other places, and people never seem to catch on.

Working at the Rosebud must be a pretty horrid job, given the attitude it leaves its employees with.

everReady?

there were diners in poughkeepsie other than the apocalypseacropolis?

For that matter, why is someone lingering with a laptop and different than lingering with conversation? I see no need to frequent establishments where customers are basically milled through as a means to an end. The more restrictions placed upon the experience and the more pressure I feel to vacate a table quickly, the less likely that I will dine there again. So the owner doesn't want the Rosebud to be another coffee shop... what is he doing to make it stand out besides enforcing arbitrary rules?
