Microburst

So! As a weather enthusiast, I thought I'd share the following conjecture.

Judging by the damage pattern I saw walking around this hour, and the fact that in neighboring towns (other than Medford) they just had heavy rain and thunder but no wind damage, I'd say we just experienced a microburst. The kind of storm that kills planes.

NWS says downburst in Belmont (http://www.erh.noaa.gov/box/fcsts/BOSLSRBOX.html), possibly elsewhere as well.

I definitely agree, it was a wet microburst. It also affected Lexington, Belmont, Somerville.

Yep, I think you're right. I've watched dozens of thunderstorms and generally love them, but that was no ordinary thunderstorm. It was the first time I've ever been frightened by wind speed. When I went into the kitchen, water was jetting in through the window and screen door before we got them closed.
That Somerville news robot that calls my cell phone said that the mayor had asked the governor to declare West Somerville a disaster area.

Now there's this creepy jurassic mist all up and down the street. I expect a 3-foot dragonfly to zip past my head...

My mom lives in Maine a bit east of Augusta and said that last week they had a microburst in a neighboring town. There was a swath of about 2 miles where all the trees had been flattened.

If I wasn't constantly thinking "Oh crap, our planet is getting really pissed off now..." I might enjoy the awe of it all.
